What are the symptoms of a women heart attack?
Women heart attack symptoms can vary from one person to another. There may be no symptoms at all, which is more common than realised and only picked up on a routine EKG or ECG (heart tracing) taken for another reason! Sudden death can occur too, however the main symptoms include:
Central crushing chest pain, often radiating to the neck or to the shoulder and arm, particularly the left arm, although either arm can be involved.
Shortness of breath
Nausea and vomiting
Sweating
Palpitations
Non –specific symptoms such a dizziness and tiredness
Mild heart attack symptoms may include 'indigestion', mild nausea, feintness, just feeling unwell, mild shortness of breath or nothing at all!
What should I do if I develop these symptoms?
The first thing you should do is call for help, particularly the emergency services. Try to relax as much as possible, sit quietly or lie down on your side if you are feeling dizzy. Concentrate on your breathing. Take an Aspirin tablet (300mg) if you have one available to you. Ask anyone around you to secure the area you in and if available make sure they get together any medicines that you normally take. If you are known to have angina and have GTN (a nitrate tablet or spray), then please try this under your tongue?
What will happen next?
The emergency services will arrive and give you oxygen. They will take various observations (pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturations and perform an EKG or ECG (heart tracing). They will take you to your local hospital where you will be assessed by one of the emergency physicians or cardiologists who will coordinate your treatment which may include thrombolysis (clot braking drug) or angioplasty (opening up of your blocked artery using a balloon or stent.
