Vickie's ibs flare

I have IBS and my IBS treatment consists of Oil of oregano, probiotics and Lotronex currently. I have been in a severe flare for 6 months now. Is there hope this will calm down? I have had IBS for 26 years but never like this. Dr's say it was due to gastroenteritis.

re: Vickie's IBS flare

IBS symptoms 'wax and wane'. I see you are taking Lotronex. What symptoms are you actually experiencing? If you are getting a lot of pain and diarrhea then this could be related to the drug. It can cause something called 'ischaemic colitis' where the blood supply is cut off. If you are getting these symptoms then you must seek medical help.

That aside, symptoms of IBS do come and go, so this maybe a particularly bad time for your irritable bowel syndrome. If you give us more information then we maybe able to help further

regards

Peter

Vickie's ibs flare

Glad to hear you have had these tests already. Did your physician arrange a Glucose-Hydrogen breath test looking for small bowel bacterial overgrowth?

ibs is an incurable disease and you will need to learn to live and work with it. Clearly coping strategies are important and you may need the help of a psychologist. Please discuss this with your physician.

Thank you

All ready had all those tests done. Blood test for celiac and small intestine biopsy. Also had 24 hour stool collection and my GI dr does not seem comcerned that stool is very yellow and of a mucus consistency. I really just want this to stop the last 6 months have been a nightmare and I feel like I am losing everything to IBS.

ibs symptoms can be made worse with antibiotics, so this maybe relevent. Yellow stool can be due to fat malabsorption - has this been checked as your diagnosis may not be ibs? Normally, If I have a patient who reports yellow stool, I check the stool for fecal (faecal) fat estimation and a fecal (faecal) elastase (stool test) to see if there is any evidence of pancreatic insufficiency. Also, it is worth having your celiac (coeliac) antibodies (blood test) checked too. If this turns out to be a fat malabsorption problem then your physician will be able to advise further.

Good luck!

Lotronex
by: Vickie

The Lotronex is helping the diarrhea and pain. I have only been on 2 mg a day for 9 days as they make you start out slow. I still have days where I have multiple yellow mucus stools but little diarrhea. Have had to take Immodium make 3 times since I started Lotronex weeks ago.
My latest problem has been a sinus infection and my dr gave me Omnicef and after taking two of them the diareha and cramping were bad for a couple of days and I stopped them after the 2 I took. I know that I may need an antibiotic if the oil of oregano and decongestants don't work soon but a ZPak is what put me in this 6 months ago.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
