Unusual Period
by Rachel
(Wisconsin)
I am a 21 year old type 1 diabetic female. I have been on Implanon for over a year, and haven't had many periods while on it. I'm sexually active with my monogamous boyfriend of 2 years, and we don't use any other protection because I was told by my doctors that there is no chance of pregnancy on Implanon.
I'm concerned because I got a period on Saturday night, and just today I overflowed my DivaCup menstrual cup twice in under 8 hours. The blood is runny and bright red, much like when you cut yourself. It also doesn't smell like menstrual fluid either, it smells like fresh blood (I deer hunt and it smells like fresh blood from a kill).
This isn't like any period I've ever had, and I was reading online of what it could be (just Implanon, pregnancy bleeding, burst ovarian cyst, etc) and I am very nervous now. Should I be concerned and see a doctor, or is this normal?
Thank you for your help.
Advice:You can sometimes get heavy bleeding even with the Implanon. The bleeding that you are having should be checked as this is not normal for you. You mention that you have already read possible causes on the internet although the majority are dysfunctional uterine bleeding. You may need to consider other options to control this such as the Mirena coil or Tranexamic acid. I would suggest you discuss this with a doctor.
