Unusual Pelvic Mass

by Cindy
(Ohio. USA)

My MRI showed a mass located between my tailbone and ovaries but not connected to any organs, what could it be?

I have had no surgeries; I carried one pregnancy to term, vaginal, with no complications. No hospitalization other than giving birth. I have no STD’s. No childhood issue and no allergies to medication or latex.

I am not currently taking any drugs.

I smoke 1 pack of cigarettes a week. Recovering drug addict for 4 years and counting. I do not consume alcohol or drugs.

My father had cancer of lymph nodes.

I was on birth control for 9 months when it was originally believed to be a complex cyst according to ultrasounds; it grew at first but then stayed the same size for several months. More recently I had a MRI which showed that the (unidentified mass) was not connected to any organs but instead was floating around in between my tailbone and ovary. I have had extreme cramp like pain in the right part of my stomach, before the birth control my period was extremely heavy, and I even had pain sometimes in my lower back but have never had any spinal issues, I do not have notable pain during intercourse that I am aware of, I have frequent need to urinate, feel bloated often, I am also frequently tired though I am not sure if that is related, and no physically bumps on lower back. I am scheduled for surgery but not for a few months and I am looking for a 2nd opinion, well kind of a 1st since my OB and some other doctor she consulted with have no idea what it may be.

I am very nervous about surgery and possible removal of whatever it may be and could really use a logical voice in my head. I could not find any answers online other than Dermoid cyst but that is usually attached to an organ, so I have been told.

Pelvic mass

Cindy, thanks for getting in touch. There are lots of causes for pelvic masses and yours has clearly been present for a long time. I’m a little surprised that your surgery is not for a few months, particularly as you mention that your OB isn’t sure what it is. Pelvic masses can be both benign and malignant, but given your comments I would assume that the doctors looking after you feel it is benign. A Dermoid cyst/Teratoma is a possibility, but other causes of pelvic masses such as a lymph gland mass of many causes, carcinoid tumours, cystadenoma (a mucin containing cyst) and an endometrioma or cystic form of endometriosis (collection of uterine tissue outside the uterus).

Until its removed, I guess all this is speculative. I wish you all the best with your scheduled surgery.
