Two year old vomiting

by Debbie
(UAE)

My two year old son has been unable to keep down food or fluids. He vomited after eating yesterday but seemed fine overnight. However he has not kept down anything since getting up this morning. He doesn't have a fever except for when it spikes when he vomits, but it corrects itself after he's calmed down. I have let him have sips of paediatric electrolytic drink but he brought that up too. He is happy sucking a wet cloth and being wiped down with it. He's content to rest but when the retching takes over it is very violent and painful for him. He's looking quite rough but is content when not retching, if a little weak.

Vomiting In A 2 Year Old

Sorry to hear of your 2 year olds vomiting. Usually vomiting in a 2 year old is due to infections, usually viral. Common causes are gastroenteritis, food poisoning, ear infections and upper respiratory tract infections. Rarely urine infections in a boy, although not an uncommon cause in a girl.

Sometimes, other more serious causes can underlie the vomiting such as chronic gut conditions (examples include pyloric stenosis, crohns disease and coeliac disease).

What You Should Do Now

You are doing all the right things. Keeping your son hydrated is the priority and you are doing everything you can to achieve this. Using paediatric electrolyte drinks are ideal too. You could try giving him paediatric Paracetamol regularly which may also help settle him down. Reassuring him is also important too.

However, it is important to keep an eye on him. Children can quickly dehydrate and this can become a serious problem so if he doesn’t settle in the next 24 hours or if he seems to be getting worse then I would ask your doctor to see him to be examined and investigated.
