Is This Trigeminal Neuralgia?

I can’t open my mouth properly and I am not able to chew hard foods. The pain occurs on both sides of my face. I can’t sit in air conditioned rooms and even cannot use fans. I feel numbness on my face and frequently I feel muscle spasm on my face. I have been suffering from this condition for the past four years. Doctor am I suffering from neuralgia?

Answer: Is This Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Your symptoms would certainly be consistent with trigeminal neuralgia. The pain is usually excruciating and not relieved with conventional painkillers. Often drugs that can alter nerve pain such as Amitriptyline, Carbamazepine, Gabapentin and Pregabalin may help. Nerve blocks are also sometimes considered. To be formally diagnosed, you need to be examined as there are other medical conditions such as sarcoidosis, parotid gland problems and other neurological conditions that can present in this way.
