tonsillectomy recovery help

by Sarah
(Lockport, NY)

Please help me!! I am 18 and had my tonsils out on Wednesday. It has been pure hell since then and I have been taking the maximum Hydros that it says I can.
The bottle says I can take 1-2 tablespoons every 4 hours if needed and I have been taking 2 tablespoons around the clock. Thursday morning I slept through my 3:45 alarm and woke up on my own in major pain. I am also taking children's Tylenol the last hour of the Hydros because the pain is so bad. This morning it has travelled into my ears and now I can't ask without falling over because I am so fish and so tired. What can I do for the pain? I'm running out of Hydros and my doctor wants me to cut down to 1 tablespoon because he won't give me anymore. Please help me, all I can do is lay I bed and cry and its Christmas eve. What can I do to help with the pain now that I can only take half the Hydros? I'm not allergic to anything, nor have I had any fun diseases or problems in the past. I’m taking liquid hydrocodone, children's Tylenol and an antibiotic. There’s no family history of problems except high blood pressure, but I don't even have this. I have tried drinking a ton of fluids and continue to do this, as when my throat is moist, it feels much better.

Pain relief following tonsillectomy

Having had my tonsils removed, I can sympathise with you! You could try soluble Aspirin 300mg dispersed in water and gargled four times a day before swallowing. You can also try Ibuprofen 400mg three times a day. They are both irritant to the stomach, so if you have any history of stomach ulcers this should be avoided.

Another simple way of helping is sucking on ice cubes, the coldness helps and you have already noticed this a bit by drinking fluids. Ice cream is also quite good too.

You are now 3 days since you had your tonsillectomy so if this continues to be an issue, you should get it checked. Good luck!
