Tender right breast
by Britt
(Pa)
I'm 21 and have family history of breast cancer. My mom was diagnosed at the age of 35 with stage 4 breast cancer. About 6 days ago I noticed my right breast was tender and sore. I didn't really pay any mind to it. Yesterday I really looked at it and under my areola I have a hard lump about the size of a dime and under the lump, (topical) there is redness. And I randomly get a sore/pain. What could this be? I have called my dr and am waiting on a call back but I'm really stressed.
Breast lump concerns
I can understand your concerns about your tender right breast lump, particularly with your family history. The fact that it is red would suggest a probable infection or blocked duct. Mastitis and abscesses can commonly present in this way. Malignancy or cancer would seem unlikely, although it shouldn't be left and you have already contacted your doctor which is the right thing to do. They will be able to examine the breast lump and advise on the best way of treating this for you. If it turns out to be mastitis, this will be treated with antibiotics. If it is an abscess, this may need draining with a minor surgical procedure. If your doctor is concerned, they will refer you to your local breast cancer services to have this checked. Let us know how you get on and good luck to you!
