Stomach Bloating Causes - Learn About Stomach Bloating

About stomach bloating causes. Learn about bloating here.

stomach bloating causes Bloating results in a lot of discomfort and is either as result of abdominal swelling or trapped wind. It's associated with the feeling of excessive wind or intestinal gas resulting in tightness or discomfort in or around the abdomen.

As a result, clothing feels tight and causes increased discomfort to the sufferer. Sometimes a burning pain is experienced and this is usually due to indigestion, a common symptom associated with bloat and drugs that reduce stomach acid can help with this. Foods can trigger symptoms and make the bloat worse.

There are other stomach bloating causes too and doctors are taught the 5 F’s of bloating. They include Fat, Faeces, Fluid (doctors call this ascites), Foetus i.e pregnancy and Flatus or gas! In IBS , it is the faeces and flatus or wind that causes the symptoms.

Trapped wind symptoms can vary in intensity from one sufferer to another. Symptoms of stomach bloating can cause embarrassment to the sufferer, particularly when in social situations. This can often exacerbate the symptoms and excessive bloat can make the sufferer look and feel as if they have put on excessive weight too.

Stomach bloating can be made worse with constipation, excessive intestinal gas, menstruation, air swallowing (if belching is evident then this is usually the cause for the bloating), food intolerances or concurrent bowel conditions such as IBD or adhesions. There can be excessive fermentation of foods in your gut by bacteria too producing gas and bloating.

Diet and Stomach Bloating Causes

Foods that cause gas are mainly high in carbohydrate, so diet is important here. Maintaining a low carbohydrate diet (the complex sugars are liked by gut bacteria which ferment them) and keeping up a high fiber diet is important.

A good fluid intake can also be helpful too. Foods such as cakes, biscuits, bread, milk, dairy products (particularly in suffers with lactose intolerance), wheat, nuts, pulses, dried fruits, vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli should be kept to a minimum. However, they shouldn’t be totally avoided as this will result in hunger which in turn can result in increased symptoms.

Reducing caffeine intake (Tea, coffee, some carbonated drinks) and fat in the diet can also help some sufferers particularly of wind and flatuance. A low fiber diet incorporating meat, eggs, fish, white bread, pasta, rice, corn and rice cakes should be taken in the diet.

Fruits are okay, but try to eat fruits without the skins (the skin has the high fiber in usually). You can read more about this topic in the IBS diet section of the website. Use of probiotics can also have a role in helping the symptoms of wind and you can read more in the best probiotics section.

Drugs for Intestinal Gas

The use of medications such as the anti-spasm drugs Hyoscine (Buscopan), Mintec and Mebeverine can help with symptoms as well as the high fiber supplement Fybogel.

Lifestyle And Bloating Causes

Reducing caffeine intake (Tea, coffee, some carbonated drinks) and increasing fluid intake can help some sufferers. Taking regular exercise, reducing stress and maintaining a healthy diet as advised above are all important factors. Charcoal biscuits have been around for many years and have been used to relieve stomach bloating causes and should be tried.
