“I’m 28 years old and I sleep well every night. However, my spouse complains that I keep on waking up every half hour and change position. I go to sleep on the floor, then back to the bed, then back to the floor, etc. Plus, she claims that I snore a lot. I know nothing about it. What can I do about it?”
Medical Advice On Sleep Disorder Remedies For Sleep Apnoea
Jack, you describe the classic symptoms of sleep apnoea. This is a condition where the upper airway becomes obstructed during sleep, resulting in short periods of reduced or absent breathing. Snoring and restless sleep is a classic presentation for this as is daytime tiredness and poor concentration. It is a very common condition and often one that goes undiagnosed.
The condition is caused by either a problem with the brain (central sleep apnoea) or with the upper airway such as a lax palate, pharynx or blocked nasal passage (obstructive). Prescription sleep medications can often make the symptoms worse as can alcohol, so it is important to keep these to a minimum.
The main sleep apnoea remedies are surgery or something called NIV or nasal intermittent ventilation. NIV is achieved by forcing air into the airway during sleep using a special form of ventilator device. Sleep apnoea disorder remedies such as this are becoming increasingly used as the condition now gains greater recognition and is diagnosed earlier.
Sleep apnoea remedies such as the above are important as if left undiagnosed; the condition can lead to complications such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Obesity or being overweight is a common feature with this condition and taking regular exercise and looking at diet is an important way of improving symptoms.
How is this diagnosed? It is diagnosed by performing sleep studies, measuring your oxygen saturation levels as you sleep with special monitoring. Your doctor will be able to help you with this and refer you to a specialist in this condition.
