Severe IBS and Periods

What can I take for severe periods from severe IBS?

I tried Advil, Naproxen, Buscopan, birth control but the cramps, bloat, and trapped gas is still so severe! Buscopan made me even more constipated and the birth control cause severe cramps and heavy bleeding. Please help.

Answer: Severe IBS and Periods

Severe IBS and periods is not an uncommon problem. Whether it is due to the hormone balance or some other factor is debatable, but the fact is a lot of women experience the symptoms of cramp, bloating and trapped gas around the time of their period.

So, how can you deal with this? Difficult to answer this as you have already tried NSAID’s (Advil and Naproxen) as well as Buscopan for the cramps. What other options are available? You mention birth control, but haven’t specified what. I assume that you mean the oral contraceptive pill? You might benefit from total hormone suppression with the depot injection or implant. Trying the Mirena coil or IUCD as an alternative may be worth trying too. Taking chamomile tea and also trying soluble fiber may be of help too. The drug, Tranexamic Acid might help to reduce the severity of your heavy bleeding.

i suffer with severe period pains and ibs

I suffer with severe period pains and IBS. I take Mefenemic acid and Tranexamic acid, combined together these allow me to carry out a normal day. The bloatedness and heaviness of my periods is reduced dramatically.

I would also suggest you avoid any medication which has co-codamol in as I find this causes severe constipation. I was initially given these medicines as a result of a uterine hemorrhage, they have both proven very effective and have made a real difference to how my life is around this time of the month.
