Scarlet Fever how long til fever goes away after getting treatment?
by Sara
(mex city)
My son (4 and a half y.o.) was diagnosed with Scarlet fever last Wednesday, he got "erythromycin" to treat it. Now 5 days after starting the treatment, I see a big improvement, the red spots are going away, his appetite is back, but he's still getting fevers (of 37.5 to 38 C) my question is how long til the fevers go away as well?... is it normal that he is still getting them? (He doesn’t get them all the time, but sometimes when he’s about to go to bed, mainly at night)... should I get another stronger treatment for the fevers? or is just part of the normal cycle of the scarlet fever?
Oh! It's the first time he gets Scarlet fever (and hopefully the last one). As family history I got that too when I was 9 y.o. And other than that, id say my kid is a very healthy boy, that’s why my concern about the fevers. Thank you, I hope you can answer me!
Fever In Scarlet FeverI suspect the fever will settle, although you can develop rheumatic fever from the streptococcal infection. This classically occurs 2 to 3 weeks after the initial illness. It can cause endocarditis, joint problems, rashes and fever so this is probably too soon for this. I would seek medical advice if the symptoms don’t fully settle in the next 24 to 48 hours or if your son displays any other symptoms.
