Ringworm Infection
Picture of Ringworm Rash
A couple of weeks ago a rash started to develop on my wrist. It started as a cluster of red bumps and then developed into two circular red rashes that are spreading outwards. It is very itchy. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? 3 separate doctors couldn't give me a diagnosis.
Picture Of Ringworm RashThis is ringworm, a common fungal infection. It is infectious and causes an itchy, red rash that spreads outwards in a ring pattern, hence the name Ringworm. If it becomes infected, it can become quite sore. Because it is infectious with contact, it is particularly common in children due to contact with other infected children. It is not serious and can be easily treated in most cases. It can however occur at any age and rarely has complications apart from developing a secondary skin infection and of course, passing it on to others. Treatment of Ringworm
Treatment of ringworm is with anti-fungal medications. The common ones used are Itraconazole, Miconazole, Ketoconazole and Clotrimazole. These can be applied to the rash as powders or creams. The rash should go in about 4 weeks. If it doesn’t settle then your doctor will be able to give you a tablet called Fluconazole to take as well. If this doesn’t settle it, your doctor will be able to refer you to a dermatologist to have a skin biopsy to confirm any other underlying cause.
Preventing Ringworm Infection
Preventing ringworm infection is important as it can be passed on to others. Make sure that you keep your skin dry and clean, use your own towel to help prevent you passing the infection on to others. Note, the infection can also occur on the scalp and cause hair loss so I would advise that you use a separate towel for your face and head.
