question about chlamydia

How can I test positive for Chlamydia and my boyfriend test negative if he is the only one I have been with for 3 months and we have been having unprotected sex since before we started dating? I'm taking Flagyl, and Doxycycline. I don't smoke or drink alcohol and there is no family history.

Chlamydia and Its Transmission

Thanks for the question about Chlamydia and its transmission. I note your boyfriend has tested negative for Chlamydia despite you testing positive for it. There are 4 main reasons why this might have happened. First of all he may have had a false negative test result. This is when the swab taken failed to pick up the Chlamydia sufficiently to give a positive result or the analysis kit failed for some reason. Second reason could be he is immune to your Chlamydia so when he was infected, his body was able to destroy the Chlamydia that was passed on to him. The third reason why he may be negative is if he has had antibiotics recently and cleared the infection prior to being tested. The fourth reason (and not one that I would in anyway insinuate) is if he didn’t have the test done. The fourth reason is purely a general statement and I presume he went with you to have himself tested.

I hope the above gives you some understanding as to why he tested negative for Chlamydia, but I think your story only emphasises the importance of having a sexual health assessment when embarking on a long term relationship. It also emphasises the importance of barrier contraception too which should always be used in the prevention of Chlamydia and its transmission as well as other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, hepatitis B and C and HIV. Sexual health assessments are so easy to have and can put your mind at rest.
