Pitiriasis versicolor
by Frank
(London UK)
I'm 27 year old. I'm not on medication; none of my family has the problem. The rash started more than 8 months ago and it appears to be spreading all over my body.
Pityriasis versicolor likely If this is itchy then it could be Lichen Planus, a condition where the rash can cover your whole body and even in your mouth, where you can see string-like areas in the cheek usually. The treatment for this is topical steroids and antihistamine drugs such as Chlorpheniramine. If itchy, the other possibility is eczema, although it doesn?t look like it so much from the picture. If the rash isn't itchy, then the most likely diagnosis is Pityriasis versicolor. This is a rash caused by yeast that usually occurs on the chest and back, but can occur anywhere. The rash is affected by sunlight, so it can be more obvious in the summer. It also seen in sweaty areas an environment it prefers. The treatment for it is antifungal cream and powders. Also, Selenium sulphide, a special shampoo can help too. Antifungal creams can often be bought over the counter. I would suggest confirming if it's itchy or not, look in your mouth to see if you can see any rash inside the cheek. This should give you a better idea as to the cause. If this doesn?t sort your problem out, see your GP for more advice. Good luck! My name is Dr Peter Thatcher MBBS, MRCPI and I am a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in the UK.
