I've had these for about 4 months and am not sure exactly what they are. They are not painful although very embarrassing and uncomfortable; they also bleed a little after going to the toilet. Could you please tell me what they are and how I go about getting rid of them please? Thanks

Advice and Treatment of Anal Warts

What you actually have are anal warts. These are quite common and often people are not aware they have them. They are caused by a virus called HPV or Human Papilloma virus which is highly contagious. This virus is spread via skin contamination and is common in sexually active people.

The anal warts, also called Condyloma Acuminata can cause symptoms of itch, bleeding, discharge and a feeling of a lump in the anal area. They can also occur around the opening to the vagina and on the penis in men.

The only way of preventing the infection in the first place is through the use of barrier contraception in the form of a condom. If currently sexually active, you should advise your partner to use a condom to help prevent transmission of the virus.

Treatment of anal warts is usually in the form of topical creams or solutions such as podophyllin solution or 5-Flurouracil cream. They can also be treated with cryotherapy or freezing the warts. Another treatment of anal warts is laser treatment as well as a surgical option too. Discuss this with your doctor.

It is important to have treatment for anal warts as they can become cancerous in some cases.
