pain where appendix used to be

by Ken
(Tremont, IL)

Im a 56 year old male, non-smoker, non-drinker

I woke up this morning with a sharp pain where my appendix used to be, it was removed 46 years ago. The pain went away after I was up for a while. After being active for a while the pain came back. There was no pain while sitting, but a sharp pain after getting up, sometimes worse when stepping on the right leg. The pain is not as bad as I remember appendicitis being.

I have had a neuroma removed from the left foot, I currently have an infected thumb from a cut caused by a tree branch, probably infected as it is slightly swollen after a week. I also had a tonsillectomy when I was 28 years old.

Right lower abdominal pain

Ken, your pain where your appendix used to be could be due to many different causes. If you have had your appendix removed, it could be due to adhesions or scarring in that area. However, there are multiple other causes that could account for this. If the pain is sharp and worse after getting up, it could be you strained the abdominal muscles in that area. It could also be due to renal stones, intrinsic problems with the bowel including bowel cancer (being a smoker increases the risk), constipation and urinary problems. Inguinal hernias can sometimes present in this way too. This is where a bit of abdominal contents, usually bowel, gets caught in the canal or channel that separates the abdomen from the leg. Really, if the symptoms don’t settle, you should see your doctor to get this checked.

Your doctor can examine you, test your urine for evidence of infections or stones and maybe refer you for investigations such as an ultrasound if there are any ongoing issues. A lot of abdominal pain is benign, so I wouldnt worry too much at this stage, but do get it checked for reassurance.
