Mirena IUD and pregnancy
by Stacie
(Coralville, IA)
I recently got the IUD about 2 1/2 months ago with a non profit doctor’s office. The first two weeks after insertion was horrible. I was cramping and had really bad back pain to the point of me even missing work because the pain was that bad. I was also bleeding constantly. Well now the bleeding comes and goes, one day I have nothing, not even a spot. Then the next Im bleeding, only it doesn't seem period like. It also had a weird smell to it. Well now for about two weeks I’ve had really sore breasts, they're swollen and I also have a metallic like taste in my mouth. I feel sick and light headed, and really wore out all the time, like I have no energy. I only cramp now when I start to bleed, it’s mainly in my back and on my right side that I feel it. I haven't been eating much either, I’ll start to eat something, take two bites and then I’m not hungry anymore and start to feel sick. I have taken two pregnancy tests and they both came out negative. I’m worried it could be an ectopic pregnancy or an infection of some sort. Should I go to the ER, wait it out, or see my regular doctor? I don't "feel" pregnant like I did with my other two pregnancies but I don't feel like myself.
Answer:
The Mirena IUD is an excellent contraceptive device and is great in a lot of women at regulating heavy menstrual blood loss. It releases a hormone contraceptive. However, there are a small, but significant group of women who just cant tolerate the IUD and have to have it removed. Yes, pregnancy can occur and I am sure you have probably heard stories of babies coming out holding the IUD, but this is rare. As for the possibility of infection, this is a possible particularly if you have noticed the bleeding has a bad smell to it. Yes, if you are worried then you should get this checked. It may be that the Mirena coil is not right for you or it may be infected. Either way, you should get this checked.
