late period but negatives on pregnancy tests
by Jessica
(North Carolina)
Hello I am a pretty healthy 20 year old female I am married. My period is about a week and a half late. Which is not normal for me, I normally have it within the 28th day of my cycle. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests (with my first morning pee) and I have read and followed everything the box said before I took them. But all of them came out negative. I dont know if I should wait a few more days or what. I have been tired more here lately and I have been peeing more also. I dont drink, I smoke some but not a lot maybe like 2 to 3 times a week. My OBGYN put me on depo provera just last month so I got my first shot when I was on my last period, before that I was off birth control. The reason why I had to go on it was because one my husband and I wanted to wait before having kids, but if I am pregnant now its fine, and second I had a cyst on my ovaries and some endometriosis so my OBGYN had to do surgery and get rid of the cyst and the endometriosis. I know that the dr. told me that the depo provera will take away my period, but not till like 6 months to a year, and I only have had one shot. They did not do a pregnancy test before they gave me the shot. I just want some answers before I make an app to see my OBGYN. I hope you can help and thank you!
Period ConfusionYour question is a little confusing as you mention in one part “put me on depo provera just last month" then later mention “take away my period, but not till like 6 months to a year”. Assuming then that you haven’t had a period for 6 months, I agree this is a long time. However, you mention your surgery as well as the depo provera and it may have been this combination that did this. Smoking too wont help. There are so many reasons for loss of periods including pregnancy, stress, weight loss and malnutrition, excessive exercise, drugs, hormonal issues and structural problems too. Its one of those situations where I thorough appraisal of your situation is needed. My name is Dr Peter Thatcher MBBS, MRCPI and I am a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in the UK.
