IS THIS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME OR NOT?
by jennifer

I wonder if anyone on here can please help? My doctor diagnosed me earlier this year with suspected IBS and put me Meverene antispasmodics, 3 tablets daily. Apart from occasional diarrhoea, constipation and stomach cramps i have been pretty good apart from a severe bout of lower right abdominal pain at the beginning of the year which petered out after several months. I do yet rare flare ups of that pain. However, last Wednesday at 1.30am i was awoken by an agonising pain in my upper left abdomen, 3 inches across from my navel. Throughout the day I had 8 bowel movements and a couple of times the pain would ease after going. The next day a locum doctor visited me and said it could not be IBS as my symptoms "did`nt fit" but he did not know what it was and prescribed Omazerapole ulcer tablets which i refused to take. That evening i had waves of colicky pain and until Sunday although i was having 2 bm a day i was constipated as it was very difficult to go and they were small, hard and very dark (apologies for gross details). The severe pain petered out till it was just a vague niggly ache but on Sunday i developed severe discomfort all over the left of my abdomen and around a little into my back. My stomach in that area would make funny rumbling noises and i had severe wind. Not slept much last night, felt nauseous, lot of gas and rumbling and uncomfortable to sleep on left side. This morning my constipation cleared up only to be replaced with diarrhoea and feeling vaguely unwell also. Went to see another locum doctor who also dismissed IBS and said it was probably a virus. I disagree, i think my regular doctor is right but would really appreciate if anyone who has experience could tell me if they think it is IBS or not. I also have occasional bouts of Chronic Fatigue and 4 days before this episode started i finished 10 days of antibiotics for a chest infection. I am feeling very sore under my ribs and abdomen and have started taking a vitamin and pro-biotic supplement (2 billion is the bacteria level), drinking Yakult and eating an organic live yoghurt daily.
