Your IBS foods should be high fibre and if this fails you can try an exclusion diet as well.

If you suffer from constipation

Your IBS foods should be high in fibre. If you suffer from a lot of bloating or wind, you should have a low fibre diet instead. If these diets are not enough, you can add laxatives to requirement.

If you suffer from Constipation without wind or bloating:

The IBS Diet Foods

All IBS diets should contain protein. The protein containing foods include fresh meats, poultry and eggs. These are all basic IBS foods to eat as proteins are required as the basic building blocks your body needs. If you exclude them in the longer term it might lead to nutritional deficiencies. Always discuss this with a nutritionist should proteins be an issue to you.

Low fibre - Good IBS Foods

Low fibre foods for IBS diet should be balanced and incorporate the following:

• White bread

• Pasta and rice (white, not wholemeal)

• Cereals that don’t contain high fibre such as corn flakes and rice-based cereals

• White flour and foods made with white flour

• Fresh fruit and juices, avoiding skins and seeds

• Vegetables, but NOT beans, pulses or corn. Remove skin from potatoes and other skinned vegetables

Foods to eat with IBS should incorporate the above.

High Fibre - Good IBS Foods

High fibre foods for IBS diet should incorporate variations of the following:

• Brown bread or granary bread

• Wholemeal pasta's and brown rice

• High fibre cereals such as Weetabix, Shredded Wheat, Shreddies and many more.

• Brown flour containing foods

• Fruit that include the skins

• Vegetables including beans, pulses, corn and jacket potato

Exclusion IBS Diet Foods

Exclusion diets by definition mean EXCLUSION which requires a lot of time and commitment by YOU. It also involves a lot of will power and can take many months to perfect. Take in the following foods:

• Meats – fresh meat and poultry. Avoid processed meats, sausages and burgers.

• Fresh fish – NOT processed fish, fried or battered

• Vegetables – ALL vegetables, but avoid SKINNED potatoes, garlic, onions and peppers

• Fruits – ALL fruits except citrus fruits such as lemon, lime and orange which are foods to avoid.

• Rice containing cereals only

• Dairy – AVOID dairy containing products such as milk, butter, yoghurt. You can replace them with soya substitutes

• Drinks – ONLY only drink water, non-citrus drinks and herbal teas. AVOID alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated drinks.

If you find your symptoms are worse, don't panic! You need to keep a food diary of everything you are eating. Comment about what seems to be making your symptoms better and which ones seem to be making thing's worse. This is not something that you will achieve in a few days, it may take you weeks to work out. Once you have achieved this, you can then create a diet containing the right foods to eat with IBS symptoms you have.

Once everything is working for you, you can then start reintroducing some of foods, but keep the diary going as you will be able to quickly see what's right and what's wrong.

Wind or Bloating Foods

You should now be seeing a pattern of IBS foods right for you. You may have already discovered that certain foods seem to increase the amount of bloating and wind you experience. Notorious foods include nuts, dried fruits, baked beans, pulses, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower. Fizzy beers (Lagers) and carbonated drinks such as cola drinks and Lemonade can also make symptoms worse.

Try to avoid these foods and once better, gradually reintroduce them into your diet again using the food diary to determine which ones cause you more problems.

Hopefully now you will have an idea of what foods help IBS and which ones don't. If you would like to contribute with your own personal thoughts on foods to help IBS sufferers, you can do so in the forum at the bottom of this page.
