Medication or drugs are commonly prescribed by doctors. They don’t cure IBS symptoms, but they may be used for pain relief or helping reduce bloating, diarrhea or constipation. However, only about 20% of people will gain good IBS control with this method. As IBS is a chronic condition, a lot of sufferers are weary of drugs as am I although they do play a role in managing some symptoms.
Probiotics involve the use of so called ‘good bacteria’ such as lactobacillus to displace the ‘bad bacteria’ in the gut. The evidence for this as one of the IBS cures is sketchy, although
ProVen
has got some evidence behind it as a way of improving symptoms. Is it one of the IBS cures? Let me know your thoughts at the bottom of the web page.
A natural cure for IBS might be sought from herbal medicine. Treatment through the use of naturally occurring herbs in the form of teas, drinks, powders and foods are popular. There is no definite evidence of benefit, although subjectively sufferers inform of some benefit with these, so at present this is very much a personal choice.
Homeopathy is a common alternative medicine and can be used in IBS. Remedies have been around since the late 1700's. Originally discovered by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, the medicines are directed at symptoms rather than the diagnosis.
Practitioners look at the person as a whole, taking a holistic approach rather than treating the condition alone. They look at the physical, psychological and emotional aspects to the illness. It has been popular throughout the world, treating millions of people. It is also popular with some members of the UK royal family and can be obtained through the NHS in the UK by qualified practitioners.
Aromatherapy is the art of healing or improving symptoms using natural ingredients that are fragrant and can also provide texture. They are obtained from plants, herbs, flowers, bark, fruits, resins or roots that are then converted into 'essential oils'. These essential oils contain many different natural chemicals that provide health benefits. Again, there is no evidence as IBS cures, but a nice form of treatment all the same.
Hypnotherapy is an altered state of consciousness that can be used in Irritable Bowel Syndrome treatment. The qualified practitioner induces a trance like state to address the physical, emotional and psychological problems of the disease.
Psychology is important and there is an intimate link. There's evidence that up to 50% of sufferers studied have some degree of psychiatric disorder. This makes it a significant mental health issue. It should not be neglected and consideration should always be given to psychological therapies in IBS treatment.
Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese art of using acupuncture needles to aid healing. The art is part of a group classified as an IBS alternative medicine or Irritable Bowel Syndrome complementary medicine in this disorder. The studies that have been done tend to favour a placebo response, although few can doubt the improvement seen in quality of life scores. A therapy that has been around for over 2500 years, it has not survived because of evidence-based medicine, but rather because a lot of people have derived benefit.
I passionately believe that one way of helping your IBS is to talk about it and I offer that option in our IBS experiences section as well as many other places on the website. The power of conversation, sharing and experience should never be underestimated!
