Hepatits B positive

(Kerala.India)

I’m a 35 years old male with 172cms height and 72kg weight.15 years back on a medical test I was tested positive to hepatitis B. (when I was 5 years of age I was affected by jaundice and was treated) when I did further tests as advised by doctors it was found HBSAG inactive on DNA and doctors informed not to worry and when you get married get your wife vaccinated. Keep testing Liver function tests every year and all levels are normal, except HBSAG shows +ve. I married 7 years back and we have a son of 5 years. My wife was not vaccinated and to date she is not infected (which proves I am not a carrier now). Is there any medicine which can make my Hepatitis B negative? I am unable to work in foreign countries because of this. Please advise.

Hepatitis B

Being a Hepatitis B carrier shouldnt affect your right to work in foreign countries and if it does then this is discrimination. As far as your carrier status is concerned, as long as you take precautions to prevent infecting others then this shouldnt be an issue.

As far as your wife is concerned, she can still get the virus even though you have been married 7 years and this does not mean that you are not a carrier now. In fact if you are surface antigen positive then you are a carrier by definition. You havent got an active hepatitis if your PCR test was negative which is probably the reason why your wife has not picked up the infection from you.

There is no treatment for carriers of Hepatitis B only those with active Hepatitis B. Carriers should take precautions not to spread the virus through their blood or through sexual contact.
