I’ve just got back from Florida the day before yesterday. I woke up this morning feeling unwell.

My symptoms include headache, sharp pain just behind the eyes, dry mouth, nausea, but no vomiting. I’ve also had a possible temperature and have been sweating a lot.

When I woke I had slightly blurred vision and ringing in ears - this has gone now.

Medical Advice - Probable Viral Cause of A Sharp Pain Behind The Eyes

Your symptoms are of concern and you need to seek urgent local medical advice for this. Whilst this could be a migraine headache, the symptoms of headache with sharp pain just behind the eyes, nausea and fever could indicate a meningitis problem or cerebral abscess. Other symptoms that would be compatible with these diagnoses include vomiting, neck stiffness and a rash that doesn’t blanche. The blurred vision and ringing in the ears would also be compatible with this diagnosis. An unusual cause would be a condition called cavernous sinus thrombosis, a clot issue that would need urgent treatment too.

Atypical infections such as Legionella and Mycoplasma infection can also cause similar symptoms and flying is a risk factor these infections due to the close proximity with other people as well as the cabin pressurisation and air circulation.

It could turn out to be a viral infection in which case the main treatment would be supportive with antipyretics such as Paracetamol, anti-sickness medication if needed and fluids.
