HCG and Miscarriage
by Miranda
(elk river, mn)
I have low HCG levels but no miscarriage yet. I found out I was pregnant about two in a half weeks ago. The next day I went for my first U/S and all that was seen was the gestational sac and yolk sac. That was on a Friday. That Monday they wanted me to take the HCG blood test and it was at 6000. 48 hours later it was at 4995. My doctor said she would expect me to have a miscarriage by the next week. Well it’s almost been a week and nothing happened. No bleeding or cramping. I have read online of other woman's stories like this but they continued with a healthy pregnancy. Could this happen with me too?
Low HCG Levels And MiscarriageLow HCG levels do suggest impending miscarriage and the fact that no heart beat was seen makes this highly likely. Sometimes the body will reincorporate the gestational sac without any symptoms, but usually you are right that you are more likely to get cramping and blood loss with a miscarriage. Is It Possible That You Could Still Be Carrying A Pregnancy?Yes, it is possible that you could still be carrying a pregnancy although the probability is small. It is possible that you the ultrasound missed a heart beat, but I don’t want you to build your hopes up over this. I would suggest that you go back to have further HCG testing and also perhaps repeating an ultrasound. You could also do a urine pregnancy test to see if you still have HCG in your system. If the test is positive then it would be worth pursuing further. My name is Dr Peter Thatcher MBBS, MRCPI and I am a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in the UK.
