Green Diarrhea, Causes Of Green In Color Bowel Movements

About green diarrhea movements. Learn about green bowel movements from a gastroenterologist.

Have you got green in color bowel movements? If you have, this is the web page for you. This form of diarrhea is common and there are several different causes for this. I will provide you with the causes of these colored stools and ways you can help improve your symptoms.

What Causes Green Diarrhea?

There are many causes for green bowel movements. The most common is due to gastroenteritis (see stomach flu symptoms for more details).

They can also be a symptom of small bowel disease or fat malabsorption. The small bowel is involved in the absorption of nutrients required for your bodies processes. There are many conditions, but the most common ones are crohns disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease and coeliac disease (see Coeliac Disease Symptoms ) due to gluten sensitivity (gluten is a protein in wheat, rye and barley)of the small bowel.

There are many other causes though, which I have presented as a list of causes of green in color bowel movements here:

Infection

Viral gastroenteritis, bacterial gastroenteritis

Small bowel diseases

Celiac (coeliac) disease

Inflammatory bowel disease

Small bowel bacterial overgrowth

Enzyme deficiencies

Pancreatic

Chronic pancreatitis

Idiopathic pancreatic insufficiency

Drugs

The bottom line with this is the need to have your green in color bowel movements investigated if they don't settle.

Investigation of Green Bowel Movements

If the diarrhea is due to gastroenteritis, this normally settles within 3-5 days. If your diarrhea goes on longer than this, it should be investigated.

Various investigations can be undertaken green bowel movements including blood tests, stool culture, stool examination for fat, fecal (faecal) elastase testing looking for pancreatic insufficiency, glucose-hydrogen breath testing looking for small bowel bacterial overgrowth, endoscopy and small bowel biospsy, small bowel meal and follow through (x-ray exam of the small bowel), enteroscopy and capsular endoscopy.

Treatment of Diarrhea

Treatment of green in color bowel movements depends on the underlying cause. If infective, it usually settles through the bodies own immune protection and the most important thing is to keep yourself hydrated with fluids and take salt/sugar replacement in the form of Dioralyte or Pedialyte. However, bacterial causes sometimes require antibiotic treatment and this will need to be discussed with your doctor.

Treatment of other green bowel movement causes, as outlined, will really need to be guided by your doctor and are too vast to cover on this web page.
