Dr Peter Thatcher, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist

Welcome to my website. My name is Dr Peter Thatcher , a Consultant Physician & Gastroenterologist in the UK (my GMC number is 4027885).

When you visit a website, there is always a question as to the quality of the site and the information you receive so I thought you might like to know a bit more about me, my story and the inspiration I got to create this website for you. After all, how can you trust what you see on the internet without knowing more about the person behind it? Perhaps this information will go some way to helping allay any concerns you may have. Dr Peter Thatcher

So, where did it all start for me? It was 1988, I was working in a laboratory and quite frankly my life was going nowhere. I knew I had to do something about it and thought to myself, I’ve got to change this. I needed a job that I would love, a job that I could wake up in the morning and feel happy to do, a job that held interest all the time and yes, I know it’s corny, one that would allow me to help others too! I always loved anything medical and thought I needed to do this for myself. In September 1988, I attended my first day at King’s College school of Medicine and Dentistry. Looking back on it, that was such an exciting, but totally scary day. How those pre-clinical years passed, it really was in the ‘blink of an eye’.

My clinical training started, my first day at King’s College Hospital in London. I donned the mandatory white coat at the time and went to my first ward, a cardiology ward of all places! The consultant met us for teaching, a very scary moment and one I will never forget. My first patient was a patient with heart disease. I was asked to listen to their chest, I didn’t have a clue at the time what I was looking for, but later realised they had a heart murmur and since then, well let's just say I’ve heard a lot of heart murmurs since then! I spent three happy years learning clinical medicine at King’s and hospitals affiliated, until that one amazing day which was to totally change my life. That day was the 12th July 1993, this was the day I could finally call myself a doctor, Dr Peter Thatcher! During my medical school years, I was lucky enough to meet Janet, my wife and we married when I entered my clinical years and have since had two lovely children together. We married in July 1990.

Once I was 'released' from medical school, I completed my junior doctor years at hospitals in and around London. I then went on to gain my membership exams so that I could apply for specialist training in General Medicine and Gastroenterology. I achieved this and was appointed to the South West Thames gastroenterology training program and subsequently the South East too.

My training took me through many excellent hospitals in and around London including the world famous institutions, St Thomas’s and Guy’s Hospital’s where I worked with Sir Richard Thompson KCVO DM FRCP, Emeritus Consultant Gastroenterologist and Queen's Physician. During this time I learnt so much and I will always be eternally grateful to all those who have taught me.

Since then I have been a UK consultant myself and have never looked back. I have also become an online doctor for this site as my real name, Dr Peter Thatcher.

So why an IBS help site you may ask? Well, it's such a common condition affecting up to 25% of the western population at some point in their lives so I thought it would appeal to all. I don't think its very well catered for and I want to try and correct that. Building a site where sufferers can exchange views as well as seeking medical advice seemed a good balance to me.

The site also provides online doctor advice for ALL GENERAL MEDICAL PROBLEMS so its a unique combination to suit all!

If you would like to make any comments about the site please feel free to do so at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for dropping by and see you again soon!

Kind Regards

Peter
