Do I still have a vaginal infection?
by Holly
I had my period on the third of this month and for the first time during my period had a yeast infection so I used Monistat. My period ended and it seemed that the discharge wasn’t cottage cheese any more but the irritation on the outside was still there. I used the topical cream that it came with and it doesn’t seem irritated any more however I have a clear fishy odour going on. Does this mean I still have an infection? If I cant see a doctor can I just continue to use Monistat or other products like it?
Fishy Vaginal Odour of Bacterial VaginosisThe fishy vaginal odour is due to an infection called Gardnerella vaginalis. The causes a bacterial vaginosis with the fishy odour you can smell and is usually treated with antibiotics. The Monistat won’t treat this although you could try natural yoghurt as a vaginal douche which may help to alter the bacterial composition in your vagina. Gardnerella is an opportunistic infection that occurs as a result of infections such as candida, antibiotic use, sexual intercourse and chemical applications.
