Diet for diarrhea sufferers (diet for diarrhoea) and more!
Diet for diarrhea sufferers
should consist mainly of water (clear fluid diet), salt and sugar (in the form of electrolyte replacement sachets) in acute diarrhea. A volume of around 3L's a day should be consumed, which will help to replace not only fluid lost from diarrhea, but also so called insensible losses from sweating or natural reduced fluid intake. By definition, acute diarrhea is a self limiting illness usually, so solid foods should be avoided whilst unwell.
For chronic diarrhea causes, the situation is a little more complex. Again, maintaining a good fluid intake to maintain hydration is important (clear fluid diet for diarrhea). Avoiding complex carbohydrates, fats and dairy products in some sufferers can be helpful. A nutritionalist or dietition can be very helpful when reviewing this.
