Diarrhea Types. What Types Of Diarrhea Are There?
Diarrhea types discussed. What types of diarrhea are there? We discuss yellow diarrhea, green diarrhea and black diarrhea too.Diarrhea is usually classified by color or on the underlying cause and these are outlined below. In IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the diarrhea can vary in consistency from watery stool to soft and 'bitty' rabbit pellet stool type.
Types of diarrhea:
1)
Osmotic diarrhea
This occurs when ingested nutrients not absorbed in the small bowel, resulting in an osmotic gradient. In basic terms this means water passes from the cells of the small bowel wall to the lumen of the bowel.
2)
Secretory diarrhea
This occurs when there is active secretion of fluids and electrolytes as well as decreased absorption. This results in a very watery diarrhea.
3)
Inflammatory diarrhea
Inflammation of the bowel occurs when there is mucosal damage (damage to the lining of the bowel). This causes loss of fluid and blood to occur with resultant bloody diarrhea.
4)
Abnormal motility
Increased bowel movements cause "intestinal hurry" so the stools are passed through the bowel too quickly with resultant diarrhea.
5)
Yellow diarrhea
,br>Yellow coloured diarrhea normally indicates fat malabsorption in the small bowel and is one of several types of abnormal bowel movements. It is medically termed steatorrhea.
6)
Green diarrhea
Green bowel movements normally indicate an infection, but it can also be a symptom of small bowel disease or fat malabsorption.
7)
black diarrhea
This is usually due to blood loss from the upper gastrointestinal tract. However, certain foods can cause this too and you can read more by going to the black diarrhea page.

IBS
diarrhea the hallmarks are usually stool weight less than 250g, often morning diarrhea and no night time or nocturnal diarrhea (i.e not waking at night with symptoms). Nocturnal diarrhea is usually a sign of patholoigical diarrhea and should always be investigated further by your doctor. The sort of tests depends on your history, the length of your symptoms, whether you are taking any medications that could potentially cause diarrhea (of which there are lots) and you can discuss these with your doctor. Often simple tests such as sending a stool sample for analysis in the lab, routine blood tests and a basic examination are all that is required. More complex tests such as a
colonoscopy procedure
or a
CT colonography
may be required and you can read more about these by following the links.
