Could You Be Pregnant? Could I Be Pregnant?
Could you be pregnant? We discuss pregnancy test issues, symptoms, your missed period and more.
Could I be pregnant? The online doctor is often asked this question. This is usually quite an easy question to answer as there are features that would suggest if you are pregnant or not.
If you are asking yourself "Could I Be Pregnant" then you may be experiencing symptoms of pregnancy. Most women feel different when they are pregnant, often having a sense of wellbeing. A lot of people comment about the so called "glow" of being pregnant, although pregnancy is often not so for women, particularly in the first trimester (first 12 weeks of pregnancy) when nausea is common. Below, I have outlined the common symptoms of pregnancy that make women ask themselves if they are pregnant. Could you be pregnant? See if any of these symptoms fit:
These include:
Missed period
Nausea and vomiting
Back ache
Increased urine frequency
Swelling of the breasts
Darkening of the areolar or nipples
A horizontal dark line in the centre of the abdomen called the Linea Nigra
Mood changes
Weight gain
Could you be pregnant? If you have these symptoms of pregnancy, you need to confirm the diagnosis. To do this I have outlined how to diagnose pregnancy below.
How do you diagnose pregnancy?
Pregnancy is diagnosed when some of the above features are present, particular if you have had a missed period. To confirm pregnancy the use of a pregnancy test is used. This is a urine test detecting HCG or Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin, a hormone produced when you are pregnant. It is normally detected in a commercial urine test, but can also be measured by your doctor as a blood test or by checking the quantities of HCG in a sample of urine, although this isn’t normally necessary as the commercial pregnancy tests are so good these days.
Finally, an ultrasound scan can be performed if there is any doubt as to whether you could be pregnant or not. Using sound waves, an image of the foetus or unborn baby can be imaged. In the early stages of pregnancy this is mearly a sac with a beating heart in it. As the first trimester progresses, the shape of your baby will form.
Period Forum Questions Asked - Could you be pregnant?
Surely I'm not pregnant?
Hi, I'm 47 years old and peri-menopausal. I have very irregular cycles so I don't know when my last period was although I do know that it's been within the last 6-8 months. Just in the past week or so I've been extremely tired, daily headaches, a little dizziness. I woke with cramps last week as if I would have a period and discovered I was spotting...this lasted for 3 days (the spotting). I'm experiencing low back pain and still getting slight cramping. I have six children and have had 3 miscarriages. If I didn't know better I'd think I was pregnant. I took two home pregnancy tests right after the spotting and both were negative. What's wrong with me?? I realize that peri-menopausal women can also get these symptoms but, all of a sudden and all at one time? I had unprotected sex 5 weeks ago and also 2 weeks ago. P.S...I don't want to be pregnant!
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
This could be the start of the menopause, after all it has to start sometime! However, period symptoms such as yours are common for no apparent reason and equally they can sometimes indicate trouble such hormone conditions and gynaecological tumours (although unusual).
If this doesnt settle, your doctor can check your sex hormone levels to see if you are going through the menopause or even check to see if you are pregnant! They can also examine you if this turns out okay in case there is anything else underlying the change.
Can I still be pregnant?
For the last 3 weeks I've been feeling lower back pain and lower abdominal pain so I took 4 pregnancy tests, 3 of them came out negative but the last one I tooked came out with 2 lines meaning it was positive but then one of the lines decreased because it was so light. I got my period that same day but its very light its not normal and right now its stopped. Is there a chance of me still being pregnant?
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
Could you be pregnant? If your test was positive then you are pregnant until proven otherwise. The lines do fade on these tests so I wouldn't read anything into this. If you want to confirm this, take another test. Alternatively, you can pop along to your doctor and they can check your blood HCG levels to confirm.
Worried that I am no longer pregnant
I am 17 and have been on depo-provera for 2 years. A year ago I fell in love with my fiancé who I adore and love very much. We believe I may be 4-5 weeks pregnant, maybe more. I have lots of symptoms such as fatigue, constipation, gas, stomach pains, throwing up, cravings, frequent urination, and back pains. I have taken 5 pregnancy tests and have had 4 negatives and one positive. Although I was excited about having a positive test, I had a fall off a kayak and hit my stomach on a dock recently and didn't think much of it till I lost almost 10lbs in a matter of 4 days. Could I have been pregnant and had a miscarriage because of the shock and my fall? Could I still be pregnant? Whats the chance?
Advice - Could you be pregnant?

Your abdominal size, looking at the photo, is consistent with someone who is 20 weeks plus pregnant. Your symptoms are also consistent too. When you had the fall, it would have been unlikely to have affected the baby, but why haven’t you been to a doctor yet? You need to have obstetric care and your primary care physician (PCP) is the first person to see.
Your weight loss might just have been due to the stress and maybe you were eating less. I presume you didn’t bleed when you fell off the kayak?
Please go to your PCP as you really need to be checked out as soon as possible.
Could I be pregnant?
I am trying to conceive for past few months with no success. My last cycle was one day late and when it came was very short (1-2 days) being heavy for only one day. On the third day of my current cycle I started to have real back ache position almost in the middle bottom near my hip joints. Occassionaly, I have a shooting pain in the right stomach that runs down to the thigh. It is just a shooting one and stops. Is there any chance of me being pregnant with all these?
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
Could you be pregnant? Yes, but clearly you have had some problems here. Have you done a pregnancy test? If you have and this is negative, but your symptoms continue then you need to see your doctor. If the test is positive and your symptoms get worse then you should also seek the help of your doctor as occassionally there can be problems. If your symptoms settle and your test is positive then you need to seek your doctor in the normal way for anyone who is pregnant, but clearly with less urgency. Good luck.
Hormonal or Pregnant?
I am lactacting and my breasts are stinging. My son is now 4 years of age. Am I pregnant? I have had negative home pregnancy tests. My last period was july 6th and my abdomen is hard. My breasts feels like water balloons, full and heavy. Am I having a hormonal problem?
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
The 2 main reasons for full, lactating breasts are pregnancy and a hormone condition called hyperprolactinaemia.
If you have had negative pregnancy tests then you need to be investigated by your doctor. Hyperprolactinaemia is a condition where Prolactin, the hormone that is involved in milk release from the breasts, is in excessive amounts.
The cause of hyperprolactinaemia is normally a small, benign tumour in the pituitary gland in the brain called an adenoma. There are other secondary causes such as drug induced hyperprolactinaemia from drugs such as Metoclopramide and many more. Excessive breast stimulation from sex can also cause breast milk release, although this is unusual.
You could be pregnant though as pregnancy tests dont always come back positive! Your doctor will be able to confirm which it is.Let us know the result!
I think I'm pregnant
I'm currently 17 and I am on the depo jab as I had a miscarriage last month but in that same month I had sex again as the hospital said that I would be most fertile in the next three months.
My mom said I would be better to go onto the depo jab.. I hate it, it has made me feel horrible inside, but I have had these weird like symptoms, before I went on the jab I took a pregnancy test and it came up negative as I didnt leave it long enough for it to come up positive I didnt leave it like a week or so and now my boobs have been hurting, I feel really sick and have been eating a lot.
I have been really tired and feeling really down and low in myself.
I also have mood swings and take everything out on my family and my boyfriend. Is it possible that I could be pregnant again and can I still have a period and be pregnant?
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
If you are having the depo jab as a form of contraception this will render you amenorrheic i.e you wont have periods. The depo jab can cause side effects that you are describing so it may well be related to that.
There is no such thing as a 100% effective form of contraception apart from not having sex! So, you could become pregnant, but the probability is extremely small. The only way of being sure is to repeat a pregnancy test again.
I would suggest talking to your doctor about all this as they may need to change the form of contraceptive that you have.
Missed Periods
Hi, I'm 23 years old. I have a history of irregular periods sometimes. My period lasts for about 5 days with heavy bleeding. I had protected sex with my fiancée in mid June. I was due for my periods around that day or so. I had bleeding after which lasted for 5 days, which is normal for me during my periods. Since then I have missed my periods. I am really worried. It’s already September and I have no periods. I have already done the pregnancy test ..urine type.. in mid July and mid August, both came back negative. As of now, I do not have any symptoms of pregnancy. For the last few months, due to some family problems, I am under lot of stress and tension and depression. Please advise me some medicine for periods. Am I pregnant? I can’t reveal it to my parents, nor can I ask somebody to take me to a doctor. Please advise .. I am under a lot of stress!!!
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
It would seem unlikely that your pregnant with 2 negative pregnancy tests. Periods can be affected by illness and stress, so if you have been under a lot of stress then this is probably the underlying cause. It might be worth doing one more pregnancy test, but if this is negative then I would reassure you. However, even if you dont seem to be having periods, you can still fall pregnant so always use protection with contraception!
Recently removed Mirena coil, can I be pregnant?
I had a Mirena coil for two years, had it removed four months ago, trying to get pregnant, I am 2 weeks late on my period, I have period like cramp, nausea, headaches and very sore nipples, I took home pregnancy tests, they are all negative, my blood test as well. What's going on with me, am I pregnant?
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
I dont think you are pregnant if your urine and blood tests are negative. Sometimes periods change and when you stop a form of contraception it can take a while for everything to return to normal. That doesnt mean that you wont fall pregnant even if your periods are irregular at the moment. A lot of women experience sore breasts shortly before a period starts.
I don't really know if I'm pregnant
I missed my period twice, I took a pregnancy test and the test showed positive. I have signs such as morning sickness, get headaches and feel dizzy sometimes, sometimes my stomach works and sometimes I'm just constipated. I also have a taste in my mouth that doesn't seem like it wants to go away, my breasts are also very sore and growing. But I would like to know could I be pregnant because sometimes I just don't feel so and sometimes I do and my stomach is not hard yet. Please I really need your advice. Thank You
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
If you have missed your period twice and have had a positive pregnancy test then by definition you must be pregnant. In the first trimester, your abdomen won't be particularly swollen or hard, but this will start to occur in the second and third trimesters. Its good that you are feeling so well in the first trimester as many women do have problems, particularly morning sickness.
One positive and 4 negative pregnancy tests
I have done 5 pregnancy test in the last 2 days the first one said positive and the other 4 said negative. Am I pregnant?
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
The first test might have been a false positive result. Another posibility is a very early pregnancy that you might have lost. The best way to determine if you are pregnant or not is to do your blood levels of HCG. Your doctor would be able to arrange this for you.
Do you think I'm pregnant?
I have been recently married. Owing to a recent family function I had to postpone my periods, so I had been taking Regestrone tablets daily. During this time, I had sex with my husband every day, As we did not want a baby so early, I took the i-pill and stopped taking regestrone even though it was a safe period just to be cautious. It has been a week since I took the i-pill and I have yet to have my period. Is there any chance that I could get pregnant? If not then when will I have my period? Please help, I am scared of any surgical procedures..
Advice - Could you be pregnant?
There's always a chance of pregnancy regardless of any contraceptive measures you have taken. However, periods often don't run to time so it you may just have a delayed period. If concerned about pregnancy take a pregnancy test to be sure and seek advice from your doctor.
