colonoscopy complications

by Gigi
(Dallas, Texas)

I am a female, should my pelvic area hurt after my colonoscopy? My doctor said the reason for this was because the doctor had trouble getting to the Cecum when they did the colonoscopy as a result of excessive looping in my colon.

Fortunately, he did manage to get to the Cecum and there was no sign of bowel cancer (I am still hurting on my right side under the right breast and rib). My question is about the pain and discomfort in the pelvic area. I feel like I have been gang raped. I can't even ride in a car. Going over the bumps is very painful in the pelvic area (I'm calling the pelvic area, the pubic hair area). I had my colonoscopy 4 days ago and I am still having this pain in that area. Is this expected and normal?

This is not normal. There may be some discomfort after colonoscopy, but I am surprised that you are still experiencing pain 4 days later. Excessive looping in the colon is common during colonoscopy and this can result in some discomfort. Pain and discomfort in the pelvic area is common, particularly if you have any history of IBS or similar, but usually settles within 24 to 48 hours. The pain you are experiencing under the right rib and breast can sometimes occur due to rare complications of colonoscopy such as perforation and also spleen rupture. I would strongly suggest getting this checked at the hospital where you had your colonoscopy. Hopefully after an examination, they will be able to reassure you, but you do need to get this checked as soon as possible. I am pleased that the Colonoscopist was able to get to the Cecum which is reassuring as far as excluding bowel cancer.

could i have crohn's or cancer
by: Anonymous

I had a colonoscopy done a couple of weeks ago and now they have referred me for a bariun enema due to not been able to see intomy small bowel due to inflamation could that be cancer.

Answer:

It depends, do you mean a barium enema or a small bowel barium? If they couldn't see in to your bowel due to inflammation then the doctor will be considering small bowel crohns. If you really mean a barium enema then maybe they didn't see all of your large bowel.

You can get fatty lumps or lipomas in the bowel, but this is unusual. You shouldnt be having the pains you are having and it is important that you havent had a perforation or hole in the bowel from the colonoscopy. You would need this investigated by the doctor who performed the procedure. There have also been reports of bleeding into the abdomen from adhesions that have fixed the bowel to either the spleen or the liver. Stretching the bowel during the procedure can cause the adhesion to pull away from the organ inducing the bleeding. This can be picked up with CT usually.

I am having the same problems and Gigi. The pain below my right breast and rib is more like a burning sensation that I feel on my back as well. The doctor said he took a biopsy of a mass he found but thought it was just fatty tissue. The biopsy results was there was no cancer. Is there such a thing as fatty tissue in your colon? Is that why I am still hurting because he took a biopsy. He ordered 2 types of antibiotics. I am 64 years old. I am also having pain where my ovaries are. It almost feels like menstral cramps. When I sit down it feels like someone has poked me with a stick. Thanks
