"I am a 24 year old man and have had a urinalysis which shows red blood cells in my urine. What does it mean?"
Medical Advice On Blood In Urine
Riod, the urinalysis shows some red blood cells in your urine (known as haematuria) which shouldn’t normally be there. There are many different causes for blood in urine and I will outline some of these here for you.
Haematuria or red blood cells in the urine indicate leakage and this can either be due to problems before the kidney such as increased red blood cell breakdown with leakage through the kidney filtration system. Examples of this would include abnormal red blood cells with increased breakdown (examples would include inherited conditions such as hereditary spherocytosis and sickle cell disease), conditions such as aortic stenosis (narrowed heart valve) and paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria. Blood clotting disorders could also cause such a problem.
The second leakage is from the filtration system of the kidney not working properly. Glomerulonephritis would be an example of such a problem of which there are several different types.
The third is leakage of blood in the kidney tract itself. Examples of this include renal cysts, renal polyps, kidney stones and rarely in a man of your age tumours. An inflamed prostate (prostatitis) is another of the causes of blood in urine as can infections in the kidney tract and bladder (bacterial and parasitic). Blood clots in urine would usually, but not always indicate leakage of blood in the kidney tract itself.
You should have the cause of blood in urine investigated further and I assume that this is happening as you have already had a urinalysis result. The sorts of tests usually depend on clinical suspicion, but may include blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound scanning of the kidney tract, more complex z-ray scans such as CT and cystoscopy (a flexible camera test to look in the bladder).
