Anti-androgen help needed
by Krystal
(Australia)
Hello, I am a transgender woman who intends on beginning my transition early next year. However, I'd still like to retain my ability to have a child in the next 5-10 years and there is no way I can afford freezing my sperm. What I would like to know is, what kind of anti-androgen would you suggest that would prevent me from further masculinizing? (I'm in my late teens) Also, I am on 200mg of Quetiapine for my sleeping and anxiety. I don't think it would be harmful with this, but I'd just like to check. I don't smoke, and I rarely drink. Thank you.
Anti-Androgen Advice in Transgender Management
Clearly, you have a dilemma here. I am not aware of an anti-androgen that would prevent you further masculinizing, but give you the ability to maintain your fertility in this situation as they are usually progesterone based. I know the diuretic Spironolactone is sometimes used as a side effect of the drug is breast growth known as gynaecomastia in men. This is unlikely to have an effect on your fertility, but a diuretic would make you pass more urine and can cause other side effects such as tiredness, electrolyte disturbances and dizziness.
Another drug used is Finasteride, an alpha reductase inhibitor. It can promote breast growth as a side effect, but can reduce both testes volume and ejaculate volume and this could be an issue. It can also cause impotence as a side effect which would also be an issue.
You really need to speak to a specialist in transgender management for more information on this, but you clearly have big decisions to make in this matter. They will be able to discuss this further with you, but you may have to make the decision whether you go ahead with your transition or not. It really depends which is of overriding importance to you. Good luck!
