abdominal severe pain on the right side

What could be causing me sharp pain in my upper right side stomach? Tests were done but still no diagnosis.

Causes of severe right sided abdominal pain

There are many causes of abdominal severe pain on the right side. These can be split in to:

Liver problems; Cysts, abscesses, tumours, hepatitis (unusual cause for sharp pain), haematoma (collection of blood)

Gallbladder problems: Gallstones, cholecystitis

Bile duct problems: Stones, strictures

Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction

Pancreas problems: Pancreatitis, tumours, cysts

Bowel problems: IBS and many others

Chest problems: Pneumonia, PE's, Pneumothorax

Musculoskeletal problems: such as slipping rib syndrome

Kidney problems: Kidney stones etc

In women: Endometriosis

Post surgical: Adhesions

As you can see there are many causes for right upper quadrant severe pain. You mentioned that you have had some tests done, although haven’t mentioned what tests these were. There are many tests that can be done for abdominal pain including blood tests, ultrasound of the abdomen, CT or computer tomography scanning, MRI scans, endoscopic tests and ultimately surgical exploration with laparoscopy or “keyhole” surgery in a few. If your symptoms have not been addressed, you really need to go back to your doctor about this as you may need to have further tests done. At the very least, your doctor should be able to help you with your pain management.

If they are unable to help you, you can always ask for a second opinion from another doctor.
