ProVen is a proven probiotic treatment of benefit in the treatment of IBS according to the Gastroenterology Today journal 2009;19(2)Summer edition. They report a benefit of this probiotic in a study of 52 patients with the Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They claim this offers hope to the 6 million sufferers with this condition in the UK.
The trial randomised 1/2 the IBS patients with a probiotic called LAB4. with the other 1/2 receiving placebo. They were assessed every 2 weeks during an 8 week period and also 2 weeks after the trial ended.
The patients taking the probiotic reported a significant benefit within two weeks of taking it. The benefits included:
Reduction of severity in symptoms
Reduction in the duration of abdominal pain
Reduction in bloating
Improved daily bowel movement
Improved quality of life
Of note, on stopping LAB4, commercially available as LAB4 , the symptoms returned.
This study is another step forward in the
