Peppermint Oil Capsule, Colpermin or Mintec for IBS

Peppermint Oil Capsule, Colpermin or Mintec for IBS treatment in Irritable Bowel Syndrome



General Information


Oil of Peppermint, Colpermin, Mintec

Indications: Colpermin for IBS or Mintec for IBS and abdominal colic.

Caution: Rarely sensitivity to menthol.

Side effects: heartburn, Perianal irritation (itchy bottom), rarely allergic reactions (including rash, headache, slow heart rate, muscle tremor and ataxia)

Dose: Comes as capsules 1-2 capsules (swallowed whole not broken as can cause mouth irritation), with water three times a day for up to 2 to 3 months if necessary

Peppermint capsules aka Mintec for IBS or Colpermin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome maybe helpful.

The Doctors View



These capsules are an excellent way of helping improve the symptoms of colic. They are generally non-toxic, readily available and a natural way of helping to improve IBS symptoms. They can be taken three times a day so this provides regular relief and they are relatively cheap to buy and available off prescription. Most patients report some relief with them. If you look at the evidence base for peppermint, studies have generally been quite small. They have shown overall benefit though.
