Mebeverine, Mebeverine for IBS or Colofac in IBS



Mebeverine for IBS , treatment of gastrointestinal disorders that cause smooth muscle spasm.

Other names: Colofac for IBS

Cautions: Pregnancy, Breast Feeding, Paralytic Ileus.

Contraindications: Avoid in Pregnancy, known allergy to the drug

Availability: Tablets or Liquid preparations

Dose: Adult and Child (over 10 years) Mebeverine 135mg three times a day 20mins after food.

Adverse effects: No serious adverse effects are known, although allergy could occur as with any drug.

Its other name is Colofac. Colofac in Irritable Bowel Syndrome works as an antispasmodic drug, a drug that reduces bowel spasm.

The Doctors View



I've got to say I am not a great fan of this drug. Whilst it can help some sufferers, I have found the majority of sufferers that have tried it prior to seeing me, with little improvement. When you look at the evidence, the drug is tolerated well. However, definite improvement in IBS is debatable.
