Lower Abdominal Pain Definition

Lower abdominal pain definition:

An unpleasant or distressing localized sensation caused by stimulation of certain sensory nerve endings called nociceptors, or by strong stimulation of other sensory nerves. Nociceptors are stimulaed by the chemical action of substances, such as prostaglandins, released from local cell damaged by injury or inflammation. Sometimes the pain can be referred i.e experienced at a site other than where the pain is experienced. Pain impulses pass to the brain where they are processed. The symptom is a way of informing the person that there is something wrong and that an action needs to be taken to sort the problem out.

Abdominal pain is a common symptom in the Irritable Bowel syndrome, also known as IBS or Spastic Colon.
