Indications
IBS (Unlicensed in UK), Chronic diarrhoea, Analgesia (Pain relief)

Cautions
May cause drowsiness - avoid driving or operating machinery in this situation. Can cause abdominal distension.
Contraindications
Acute diarrhoea conditions such as acute inflammatory colitis or antibiotic associated colitis.

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, low blood pressure
Adult dose
Codeine 30mg three to four times a day (range 15mg to 60mg)

Codeine Phosphate is particularly good in the treatment of diarrhea. It has the qualities of both reducing diarrhea and also has an analgesic effect when cramps are an issue. It can cause drowsiness so should be used with caution, but is a good drug to use when symptoms are bad.
