Co-Phenotrope In IBS Or Lomotil In IBS

Indications: Co-Phenotrope for IBS (Unlicensed use in UK), Aid to rehydration in acute diarrhoea, Chronic mild Ulcerative Colitis.

Some people think of this drug as a cure for diarrheal, but it only reduces the frequency of diarrhea. It is a very good drug for this though.

Drug names: Lomotil, Diarphen, Tropergen.

Cautions: May cause drowsiness - avoid driving or operating machinery in this situation. May cause abdominal distention.

Side effects: Nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, low blood pressure, dry mouth, blurring of vision, difficulty passing urine.

Adult drug dose: Lomotil 2.5/0.025 Initially 4 tablets, followed by 2 tablets every 6 hours until diarrhoea controlled.

Co-Phenotrope or Lomotil, isn't a cure for diarrhea, but can be used to reduce stool frequency and should be thought of as an irritable bowel syndrome drug, but only as an adjunct with lifestyle changes.
