Buscopan, Hyoscine Butylbromide & Buscopan Plus
Drug name:
Buscopan, Buscopan plus (Hyoscine-N-butylbromide 10 mg, paracetamol 500 mg), Hyoscine Butylbromide
Indications: One of the antispasmodic agents used in the symptomatic relief of colicky abdominal pain, seen in
IBS.
Cautions: Use with caution in patients with Down syndrome, in children and the elderly
as increased risk of side-effects. Also use with caution in reflux oesophagitis,
diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis, acute myocardial infarction (heart attacks),
hypertension, conditions that can increase heart rate (thyroid overactivity or
heart conditions ), fevers, pregnancy and breast feeding.
Contraindications: Glaucoma, myaesthenia gravis, paralytic ileus, pyloric stenosis, prostate
enlargement.
Side effects: Constipation, transient bradycardia (slow heart rate) followed by other heart
rhythm disturbances, reduced bronchial secretions, urine urgency and retention,
dilated pupils, photophobia (light sensitivity), dry mouth, flushing, skin dryness,
Occasional confusion, nause, vomiting and giddiness.
Availability: Tablets, injection.
Dose: By mouth (adult) 20mg Four times a day
By injection 20mg as a stat dose IV or into the muscle.
