6 weeks pregnancy

by Shakthi
(Tamilnadu, India)

I am 29 and I am pregnant after treatment. I had my last period on 11.03.10 & my egg got ruptured on 27.03.10. After 6 weeks I went for a scan & my doctor said that the fetus is very small (3.2) and without any heartbeat as far as they could see. They asked me to come for rescan after 10 days. Please tell me if this is normal and will I get a positive result during my next pregnancy scan? Please help. Thank you for your help in this matter.

No fetal heart beat, does this mean the fetus is dead?

Shakthi, I am so sorry to hear of your problems. A small fetus and no heart beat is usually a bad sign, although it is very difficult to be certain sometimes. The reason for the repeat scan is to confirm that there is no heart beat and that the fetus is not viable. I would be lying to you if I said all will be well, although occasionally the scans are not 100% so the second scan will confirm or refute this. If you miscarry, this is natures way of dealing with a baby that is not forming right and doesn't mean you won't be able to become pregnant again should your current pregnancy not proceed. In fact, if this does happen I would suggest that you try for a child as soon as you like (assuming you wish to go through this again) as there is little evidence that delaying trying again makes any difference. A lot of pregnancies are lost, even before women are even aware of it. I hope all goes well for you and I am more than happy to offer any further help to you in the future should you need it.
